D-I-Y Maintenance Reference Index - Forum Wisdom Links GTL v. Bagger v GA

My GTL is my favorite bike of all time but (as stated in another thread talking about Harleys) I find it too easy to drop in slow/stop situations. I'm 71 and vertically challenged but have had a lot of bikes and none that I had trouble keeping upright like this one. Some in this forum have traded GTL's for Baggers or GA's and say that the B and GA are a lot easier manage. Maybe they can tell me if trading this GTL in on a Bagger or GA is a waste of my time and money? I know we discussed this in another thread but I'm hoping to get more input which doesn't involve buying a Harley as an alternative.

Oil usage

I have made about 3000km with my new bike picked up at 39000km.
I did not check the oil. The bike was serviced at 36k.
I have to fill up with one liter of oil.
Is this in line with normal usage?

Who still has their '12 GTL/GT?

Curious how many forum members still have their original GTL/GT from '12. Granted, I didn't buy my '12 GT new; it was 2 months old/1400 miles on it when purchased in October 2012. I'm now just shy of 80K miles and running strong. Instead of planning for or buying a new bike I've invested in keeping the bike in pristine running condition, e.g. Wilbers, Brembo Master Cylinder, Carbon Fiber wheels, ball joints, exhaust, a little vinyl wrapping, NAV VI, Baja LED lights, etc. Truth is I'm still riding it because there hasn't been what I'd call any significant changes that would prompt me to replace it. And there's no other bike, make or model, that I'd consider an upgrade. I read where others have moved on and/or come back to a K bike. Every time I throw a leg over the GT I still get the same smile on my face. Before this GT I had my share of bikes; moving from one to another, e.g. high performance HD for over 20 years, a couple of Its and an '09 K1300GT. Gratifying to not have that itch for the latest newcomer out there that would be a 'better performer'.

I have a brand new B with the nav 6. Does the turn by turn play through the speakers? I am struggling getting it to work. Or is it Bluetooth only to a helmet? I appreciate the advice.

Headlamp protective film

Anyone have a link for self healing clear protective film for a 2018? I bought some from Weather Tech for my 15 F150 that was thick, easy to apply, virtually invisible, and has held up very well. I'd like to find something similar to protect the headlamp on my new 18 GTL. I'd like to find a kit that's cut specifically for this application.

Navigator 6 question

I have just acquired a BMW Navigator 6 after selling my R1200RT LC with the Nav 5. I'm sure that the Nav 5 showed the range still available with the remaining fuel in the tank on the map page together with speed. I have tried to set the same thing up on the Nav 6 but can't find any way to do this. Can anyone help me with this? I would be most grateful.
I have replaced the RT with a K1600B GA and am totally in love with it. After 4 RTs, a R1200R and a K1200GT I find this bike so smooth, powerful and most of all it handles so well. I bought the bike at a bargain price with only 1360Kms on the clock in pristine condition. I hadn't even ridden a K1600 and was really worried that it might be too heavy (I'm 76 years old) but I am blown away at how it corners, low speed handling and general comfort. The seat and ergonomics are so much better than the RT. I did add a pair of Helibar bar raisers/barbacks which have helped greatly. I do have to be a bit more wary when moving the bike around the garage and putting it on the centre stand. Perhaps I just like the difference but as of now I am highly impressed.

In the Shop for Sprag Clutch

It happened to me - intermittent sprag clutch failure! A year ago I experienced the failure with the spinning starter. The issue occurred three times over a month, but she would always start after the third or fourth starter engagement. The issue stopped and she worked fine for the next year. Last month, the spinning starter issue reoccurred multiple times. On one occasion it took 14 attempts before she started. Thankfully I was able to record two of the times she didn't start and show it to the service tech. His immediate reaction was "sprag clutch." In case you are wondering, my K16GT is a 2013 with 78,500 miles.

She's in the dealership service bay now. Hopefully the issue is covered by my maintenance insurance. I have Pinnacle. Otherwise, I'm expecting $$$$.

Fault Code 21F610

I am having an intermittent left helmet speaker audio issue. Initially I thought the issue was the helmet speaker or connection. For grins, I hooked up the GS-911 and it showed a 21F610 fault code, Alpine left channel. I could not find the fault code in the DVD service manual (user search error?). Anyone have an idea what the specific fault is or the fix?

Designed and 3D printed a cover when removing the top case. Have a few more iterations to go...but I'm pleased so far. In the end it be one piece. Not sure if I want to sand and paint it or not.

As a side note...got the Bren Tune installed. It's awesome. I'll just keep it at that.

Saved by the bars - first drop

After a year, softly dropped the GA yesterday morning for first time. Trying to push off backwards, turning hard/sharply to my left, and inside turn foot (left) slipped in some gravel. I couldn’t stop that sudden momentum of the bike falling with the front wheel turned hard left . I did confirm the rear Ilium bars do their job. Their scratch were the only found - except for the ones on my pride. Right in front of the windows at a Waffle House too 😂. The bars more then paid for themself. I probably would have taken a pic of the touch-points had I not been the breakfast crowd entertainment. My son was handy to help me quick lift it back up. Did the short radius backout exasperated the situation with more foot force used (unseen gravel), and the non-ability to save the drop because the wheel was turned hard left when the sudden inertia went left?

Tall riders! What do you use for highway pegs?

I'm 6'05" with 34"+ inseam. I'm seriously considering the expensive Wunderlich engine bars for my 2018 GTL. Looking for recommendations for some kind of foot peg so that I can stretch out on long trips.

I remember seeing something like a horizontal half stirrup like device that mounted under the stock for pegs and pivoted out and forward, but I can't seem to find that thread now.

Anyone have parts suggestions?

Part of my Nav V is covered up by the bezel. It's a 2012 bike, so I assume the instrument cover is for the Nav IV, but I want to be certain before I spend the money on a replacement.

SuperProAutomatic intercom for Sale

$

I have the following Autocom intercom for sale. $400CDN ( w/Kenwood radio and cables) or $250CDN (without the Kenwood radio and PTT button). You pay shipping. With the current exchange rate, this is a good deal for my US friends!

Here is the parts list:

- SuperProAutomatic with Noise Isolating Power supply. The SPA has had its knobs extended so that they are reachable when mounting under the tail section of the K1600. The extensions can be easily removed by slightly heating the rubber tubes. The circuit board in this unit was updated by an Autocom dealer a couple years ago and is so a newer version of the board.

- Rider headset with noise isolating sensor (this headset has an issue in the wiring that would be fixable if you are handy with wiring - the break is right where the wires gather together into the sheath that runs to the large connector)

- New Rider headset (still in the box)

- Pillion Headset (Used)

- Pillion Headset (unused still in box)

- Two fixed style boom mics - used

- One flexible style boom mic - used

- One flexible style boom mic (unused still in box)

- Three full mic sponge cover kits new in package

- One partial mic sponge cover kit in package

- Straight headset lead that allows for an in-ear speakers (new in box)

- Two curly headset leads

- BTM-02A bluetooth Module

- Rubber mounting points for headset cables

- Kenwood TK3300 radio with charger, battery

- Not pictured is the bike powered module that powers the Kenwood and connects to the SPA

- PPT button for the Kenwood. Not pictured is the modification from RocketMoto that mounts this on the left control on the K1600.

- Flat antenna for Kenwood that mounts inside the fairing of the K1600

- Collection of audio cables for connecting phones and audio devices

Fender extenders and wheel chocks

Any experience with the various fender extenders and using a front wheel chock on a trailer? I have a trailer with the Harbor Freight chock (don't laugh, the trailer was free to me, included the chock, and it appears to be a solid built unit). How about other, more expensive chocks like the Condor units? Do the two interfere with each other?
